After years of trying to get Congressional passage of a GE labeling bill (sponsored mainly by Rep. Dennis Kucinich and Sen. Barbara Boxer), activists have worked with legislators on a new strategy–trying to get the FDA to alter its policy against the labeling of GE foods. A substantial number of Members of congress have signed on to a letter requesting this change (55–including AW’s home representative, Jim Mcdermott). AW does not agree with the letter’s acceptance of the FDA’s view that there is no difference between GE foods and conventional ones, however; the industry frequently argues to the Patent Office that GE foods are novel and different.
